WORLD-FAMOUS American adventurer Steve Fossett tonight paid tribute to the two men who had inspired his transatlantic flight in a replica World War one bi-plane.

He and co-pilot Mark Rebholz successfully flew from Newfoundland to Clifden on the West coast of Ireland, repeating the feat achieved by British pilots John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown 86 years ago.

Mr Fossett, who landed on the eighth fairway of the Connemara Championship Golf Links in Clifden at 5.04pm, said they had taken many chances.
