Aspiring designers look to legends

LEONARDO da Vinci and Marilyn Monroe are among the legendary figures who have inspired students from the oldest fashion college in the country.

Aspiring designers look to legends

Aspiring young designers from Limerick School of Art and Design, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, will display their works at the college's annual fashion show next week.

Twelve degree students, including recent Persil Fashion Award winner Abu Sufyan, will showcase their innovative designs at the Southcourt Hotel in Limerick on June 4 next.

Next week's fashion extravaganza will also feature collections from 20 of the college's diploma students.

Ruth Somers has spent the last few months working on her design which was inspired by her interest in rugby and movie icon, Marilyn Monroe.

Entitled 'Dirty Sweet' the pink and black ensemble comes complete with sprayed-on dirt.

"I wanted to use something very masculine and really feminine at the same time to see how they would work together, basing it on the whole idea of opposites attracting," the 21-year-old said.

Fourth year student Patricia Heery from Dublin was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's sketches of early flying machines for her design, entitled 'Soaring Aspirations'.

Made from turquoise Italian silk, the halterneck figure-hugging dress is held together by brown elastic and copper rings.

"I used the elastic and the copper rings because I thought that's what Leonardo would have used in his machinery," the 24-year-old said.

The fashion show takes place in the Southcourt Hotel next Thursday at 8pm.
