Head injuries after violent assaults on the rise

HEAD injuries caused by violent street assaults where the victim is kicked on the ground by a gang are on the rise, a consultant at the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) warned yesterday.

Speaking at an Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children, Dr Mark Delargy said that while there has been a reduction of NRH admissions of people suffering serious disability as a result of road accidents, the balance has now merely tipped with victims of violent street assaults being admitted instead.

Dr Delargy said that the NRH was now seeing a number of patients being admitted with head trauma as a result of assaults, which usually occurred outside pubs when a group of people kick the victim.
