Sunbeam site set for €105m development
Plans were lodged with Cork City Council yesterday by Mallow Road-based Rothbury Estates for an apartment and commercial redevelopment of the four acre Blackpool site.
The scheme, backed by businessman Martin Buckley, includes an 18-storey apartment tower, which if cleared through planning would make it one of the city’s tallest buildings.
It is just one of a number of major multi-million euro property projects in the pipeline which are set to continue the rejuvenation and transformation of Blackpool.
The 64,000 square metre Rothbury Estates project will include three apartment blocks ranging in height from five to seven storeys.
However, block one will include the 18-storey tower.
A total of 260 residential apartment units ranging from one to three bedrooms will be built over the complex.
The plans includes a large retail warehouse unit and a garden centre. Smaller retail units, a leisure centre, a children’s play centre, a creche and a three-storey cafe will also be built.
The company also wants to build a 12,000 square metre office block - one of the city’s largest if it gets the go-ahead.
Parking for almost 700 cars will be included, as will a new riverside park along the River Bride, parts of which may have to be realigned.
A massive fire swept through the Sunbeam business park on September 23, 2003.
The blaze destroyed the Refond textiles plant and a number of adjoining business units.
Several other units, including Northside Community Enterprises, where more than 300 people work, and the Spring Grove laundry company were saved.
Meanwhile, as reported last week, confirmation is expected within days that the Revenue Commissioners new Cork office will be located on a site off the Watercourse Road on the city-side of Blackpool.
The transfer of its operations from Sullivan’s Quay will see almost 600 revenue staff moving in one of the city’s biggest office relocations.
