Sources in the north Dublin area of Finglas believe Victor Murphy may have discharged a shot as he tried to grab his shotgun to fire at rival drug dealers last Wednesday.

Detectives are hunting a notorious local 22-year-old drug dealer, who was in the car with Murphy.

It is understood officers raided and searched the criminal’s house and that of his girlfriend, but did not find him.

“The area is saturated by uniformed and plain clothes detectives. They are waiting for him to show his head,” said a local source. “He has a number of safe houses in the area. He is still here. He’s been seen.”

The criminal, recently released from prison, is also thought to be involved in the gangland murder of Finglas dealer William O’Regan in nearby Cabra last month.

However, gardaí yesterday repeated that there was no direct link between the two fatal shootings.

A garda source said there were a number of separate feuds going on in the Finglas area.

Gardaí yesterday confirmed there may have been possibly three people in the car, including Murphy.

They said there was no evidence that Murphy was shot by one of the other occupants. Murphy’s family are said to be very upset at the way he was dumped on the side of the road by people he knew.

Officers investigating the O’Regan murder yesterday said they had not yet made any significant progress, but had received a good response from the public.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Tallaght, west Dublin, are continuing their investigations into the murder of doorman David McGuinness on 8 July. Detectives are also investigating two non-fatal shootings in Dublin on Monday in different parts of the south inner city.
