Never too late to make our voice heard despite missed opportunities

WHEN the result of the election for non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council was announced on October 10, 2000, there was general surprise, not so much at the fact that Ireland was elected, but at the level of support achieved.

Ireland was elected on the first ballot with 130 votes out of a potential 173 and ahead of strong candidates like Norway and Italy.
