The two women, from Cardiff, were shoved to the ground and then repeatedly punched and kicked.

They were walking from a pub to their hotel with their husbands when they were attacked at about 11pm on Sunday.

The victims and their husbands told gardaí the man, who was on his own, went “berserk.” He came at the tourists from behind, shoved over the two women and began kicking and punching them.

It was all over before the two men could react, gardaí have been told. He made no attempt to steal anything.

The injured women, aged 64 and 48, received treatment for serious facial injuries following the attack. They were taken to St James’s Hospital, where they remained overnight.

The two couples, from Cardiff in south Wales, were on a weekend break in the city.

They were walking back to their hotel and had reached the top of Nassau Street, as it runs into Clare Street, when the attack happened. Gardaí believe the man may have followed the holidaymakers.

Detective Inspector John Fitzpatrick, of Pearse Street Garda Station, said: “we are very anxious to trace this man. He may have gone into a shop, somebody may remember this particular man that committed this assault. He is very distinctive due to his height and his physical appearance.”

He is described as 6ft 3in to 6ft 5in, bald and tanned. He was wearing a three-quarter length coat, black trousers and Doc Marten-type shoes or boots.
