Galwey humbled by honorary degree
The Kerryman was one of five people presented with a degree from Trinity College in a ceremony held in Dublin.
“Obviously I am very honoured. It’s a great honour to get something like this but I would never have got it had it not been for the great players and great teams I have played with. It’s for them,” said the 36-year-old.
Now retired from international rugby, but still lining out for Munster and Shannon, Galwey said he was delighted at being given a doctor in laws (LL.D) degree from the university. “I am humbled by the whole thing.”
Capped 40 times for Ireland, Galwey was described by the university as an inspiration. During a glittering career, he led Shannon to five All-Ireland league titles and Munster to two European Cup and one Celtic league finals.
Also honoured was distinguished astronomer Patrick Moore, who has presented BBC’s Sky at Night for the last 45 years, for which he recently received a BAFTA award.
Sculptress Imogen Stuart, research scientist John Goodby and philosopher Onora O’Neill also received honorary degrees.
Ms Stuart, who has lived in Dublin for many years, was described as an outstanding sculptress. Her work stretches back over 50 years.
Professor Goodby is a leading researcher in the field of advanced materials.
He is professor of organic chemistry at the University of Hull and Fellow of the Royal Chemical Society.
Dr O’Neill, a member of the British House of Lords, is head of Newnham College.
