Girl critical as gardaí seek crash witnesses
There were no independent witnesses to the head-on collision in which 41-year-old Fergal Egan from Ballycullane, New Ross, died on Thursday.
The car he was driving collided head-on with a car driven by Stella Meaney, from Co Kilkenny. The young mother suffered broken ribs and a broken pelvis in the smash.
The younger of her two daughters, six-year-old Aoife, remains in a critical condition at Beaumont Hospital, suffering from a fractured skull and severe brain injuries.
Her 10-year-old sister, Sinead, is in Wexford General Hospital.
The second occupant of Mr Egan’s car, his 39-year-old wife, Beverley, was injured. She is being treated for fractures.
Gardaí said it was surprising there were no witnesses to the crash, on the busy main New Ross to Wexford Road, close to the landmark Horse and Hound bar and restaurant at Carrigbyrne at around 1.30pm.
The Egans had just came off the ferry in Rosslare after an Easter break in France. They were within a half-hour of their home at Ballycullane, New Ross, when their car, which was pulling a trailer, was in collision with the approaching people-carrier.
Supt Tom Saunderson of New Ross garda station appealed to witnesses to come forward. “We are still trying to establish what happened. This was a wide stretch of road with a gradual curve.
“Conditions were ideal for driving at the time. We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the accident to contact us here in New Ross,” he said.
A 49-year-old lorry driver died yesterday after being pinned in his cab by a load of steel he was carrying.
A 43-year-old woman was also injured in the traffic accident on the N4 at Killeighter Cross, Kilcock.
Following the accident, the road was closed for five kilometres from Enfield on the Kilcock side.
