Officers investigating the death of well-known soccer player, Adrian Cogley, from Canon Murphy Park, Clonroche, Wexford, say they are following a definite line of inquiry.

The young, unemployed man was found lying on the road in an area known as Kellystown, close to the village of Adamstown by a motorist at around 5.55am. He’d been knocked down just minutes earlier and was taken to Wexford General Hospital where he later died from severe injuries to his leg and arm.

Adrian Cogley was out with several friends prior to his death and was walking alone along the road alone when he was hit. A local man is believed to have been driving the car involved in his death.

A number of other men were also believed to have been travelling in the car.

The car was later found burnt out.

Superintendent Tom Saunderson, who is heading the investigation, appealed for witnesses.

“We understand the young man had been at a house close to the scene and left that house. He was walking on the roadway and it was very dark at the time.

“We would be anxious to speak to anyone who was on that road between 5am and 6am. We have made very good progress in the investigation and we have recovered a car we believe may be connected to the incident.

“It was recovered at a quarry near Barntown. We are anxious to speak to anyone who was in that area from 8am and noon. The car is undergoing forensic examination, but we believe it was connected to the incident.”

Gardaí have interviewed a number of people. But they are still anxious to talk to anyone who can help with the inquiry.
