Top Cat DJ set to sell car he risked his life to save in high-speed chase
The star Kilkenny hurler chased a lone culprit who made off with his ā¬50,000 BMW when he left the keys in the ignition on Wednesday.
The chase, which began at Crookstown Motors in Ballytore, ended with DJ pinning the car thief to the ground in Cellbridge over three-and-a-half hours later.
The car was recovered but 2,500 in cash and two mobile phones were taken.
GardaĆ in Celbridge are looking for the thief who escaped when accomplices pulled up in another car. They are following a definite line of inquiry.
āI work hard and do a lot of travelling,ā Mr Carey said yesterday.
āCitroĆ«n are very good to me and have given me a free car.
āI had the CitroĆ«n in for a service and took out the BMW.
I had intended selling it all along and didnāt want to lose it in this raid.
āItās for sale because Iāve a car from CitroĆ«n and thereās no point in having two.
āItās a fairly famous car now and if anyone wants to buy it, it is for sale.
āIt would have been an absolute killer if it was burnt out somewhere.
āYou donāt know what will happen with insurance if you leave keys in it and it was robbed and burnt out.
āMy insurance was on the other car and I had transferred it, but I didnāt want to lose anything. At the end of the day, all these things can be replaced.ā
Now the adrenaline rush is over after the high-speed chase, the reality of what might have unfolded were the car thief armed is beginning to hit home.
āA lot of people, including Brian Cody, were worried if someone had pulled a knife or something, Iād be out of the All-Ireland.
āI even missed a training session on Wednesday night. I couldnāt get there because Iād no car.
āWhen I announced at training that my car had been stolen, there were a few sniggers. People didnāt really believe it. Iām sure Iām in for a bit of sneering on Monday night.ā
The player said his temper flared when the car sped away in front of his very eyes.
āWe all work hard enough to put things under us. Money doesnāt grow on trees. My livelihood was invaded by this guy.
āI built up a bit of adrenaline and it would have been a different scenario if he stood up and fought. He ran. I donāt think too many were going to out-run me in the situation.
āEven though I missed training, I got a bit of exercise in running after this guy.ā
