Rise in income for diocese at centre of abuse probe

Last year a BBC documentary highlighted the Diocese of Ferns’ failure to act on allegations of clerical sexual abuse.

When former bishop Brendan Comiskey resigned after he was criticised for his handling of abuse allegations, the Church began a long and painful healing process.

His temporary replacement in the Wexford diocese, Bishop Eamonn Walsh, began visiting parishes impacted by abuse, apologising for inaction and promising compliance with any investigation.

As the Ferns inquiry continues in Dublin, central fund accounts for the year ended December 31, 2002, show its income has increased by over €50,000 in the past year. Its operating deficit fell by €25,000.

Proceeds from parish envelope collections rose from just over €331,000 to €376,000. Donations and legacies more than doubled, from €18,887 in 2001 to almost €47,000 last year. Over €15,000 was found in dormant accounts.

The Diocese of Ferns has yet to appoint a successor to Dr Comiskey. A final decision on who will succeed him is not expected until at least next year.

No official comment has been made on the appointment by the diocesan office in Ferns.

But priests in the diocese have been contacted about the appointment.

They are not being asked to nominate a successor to Dr Walsh. But they are instead being asked what characteristics and attributes should be found in such a person.

A number of priests have been tipped for the post, including Rev Joseph McGrath, parish priest in New Ross, as the front-runner, along with Monageer’s parish priest, Rev Fr William Cosgrave.
