Children ‘at risk of hydration on car trips’
Parents were urged to ensure kids drink up to eight cups of liquid a day during long journeys in the summer months.
Even a 1% loss of fluids can cause headaches, dry eyes, drowsiness, loss of concentration and irritability, the Beverage Council of Ireland said.
“Have plenty of fluids on board for long car trips as fluid loss can occur even in an air-conditioned car,” a spokesman said. “Frequent drinking of fluid can also reduce travel fatigue.”
He said children will often be busy enjoying themselves and may not realise they are getting dehydrated.
Consultant nutritionist Dr Mary McCreery added: “Everyone needs to be aware of their fluid intake, in particular when they are active in warm weather.
“Adults playing sports should always drink a non- alcoholic drink first before they drink anything else.”
The Council represents makers of fruit juices, soft drinks and bottled waters.
