Hunt for crime spree gang

GARDAÍ are searching for a gang of up to six masked men who went on a crime spree in Co Cork and Co Tipperary and tied up a security man before trying to rob a meat plant’s safe.

The gang, who gardaí suspect are from the Limerick region, broke into Dawn Meats plant in Charleville shortly before 1.30am yesterday. They threatened a security guard and tied him up before trying to break into the safe.

The gang were unable to open the safe. The security guard, who is in his 50s, freed himself and alerted the gardaí.

Gardaí sealed off part of the premises and carried out a forensic examination. They believe the same gang later headed to Mitchelstown where they then broke into a sausage factory and stole a sum of money.

This probably happened sometime between 2am and 2.45am. They then stole a van which they later abandoned.

Gardaí in Cahir, Co Tipperary, were then alerted to the gang when they attempted to break into the Kilcoran Lodge Hotel at 3.05am. They fled the scene in a silver Opel Vectra in the Mitchelstown direction.

Anybody with information about the gang is asked to contact Mallow Garda Station at 022 21105, Mitchelstown Garda Station 025 84833 or Cahir Garda Station at 052 45630.
