Loss of 48 jobs will have ‘a major effect on the region’
Intel Freight, which is based in Knocktopher in Kilkenny, has gone into liquidation with the loss of 48 jobs. Staff were only informed of the decision on Friday afternoon as they prepared to leave the plant. A liquidator has already been appointed to wind up the enterprise.
Local TD and Junior Agriculture Minister Liam Aylward said it would have a major effect on the region: “I will be talking to the IDA, the minister and others. I have no magic wand but hopefully, we will be able to pick up the slack.
“I’ve met with the company and hope to meet with them again. I don’t know what we can salvage from this. The company has an excellent workforce which is now without jobs and we hope to be able to do something for them,” the Fianna Fail TD said. The minister does not believe that the liquidation of the company is a bad omen for Kilkenny and does not believe that it is a consequence of a general downturn in our economy.
“Intel was a very successful company,” he said. “The climate is not as good as it was. We have to acknowledge that. But our priority has to be the people who have now lost their jobs.”
Intel Freight has contracts with up to 50 haulage companies throughout Ireland. The company has operated for over 10 years and is part of the Intel Logistics group. It has been taken over by liquidators, Kavanagh’s Chartered Accountants in Dublin.
