Stars flock to Harry Potter Irish gala

A PLETHORA of Potterphiles paraded to the Dundrum Town Centre cinema last night for the latest celluloid chapter in the fictional life of four-eyed phenomenon Harry Potter.

Stars flock to Harry Potter Irish gala

Attending the Irish gala of the much-heralded movie were some of the major players in Ireland’s entertainment industry including singer/actor Samantha Mumba; directors John Boorman, Neil Jordan and Jim Sheridan and a veritable who’s who of RTÉ radio and screen.

It was fitting that the gala was staged in Dublin, as one of the great new stars of the Potter saga is a Dubliner by birth, Brendan Gleeson.

Gleeson, one of Ireland’s most prolific movie actors, was said by many to have stolen the latest show in his zany role as the grizzled Mad Eye Moody, a former dark wizard catcher who has taken on a Hogwarts professorship as a personal favour to headmaster Dumbledore, played by Michael Gambon, another Dubliner.

The movie will open to cinema audiences around the country on November 18.

Last night’s consensus was that this film is darker and scarier than the previous adaptations of the multi-million-selling books by author JK Rowling.

Directed by Mike Newell, The Goblet finds perennial Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) wondering why his legendary scar - the famous result of a death curse gone wrong - is aching in pain and causing mysterious visions.

Before he can think too much about it however, Harry boards the train to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he will attend his fourth year of magical education. Shortly after his reunion with his best friends, Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) he is introduced to Mad Eye Moody and from there on it’s non-stop thrills, spills and spells.

With the unfathomable Professor Snape, played by Alan Rickman, and the menacing presence of the most feared wizard in the world, Lord Voldemort, the latest effort has all the necessary movie magic to keep Potter heads happy.

And with the next film already in production, it looks like Harry will tarry for some time yet.
