Convertibles have become a shrinking market as SUVs continue to dominate new car sales, but there is still a great selection of models if you like the idea of the wind-in-the-hair experience.

The BMW 4 Series Convertible is one of the more luxurious cars on this list, packing four seats, an electric-folding roof and rear-wheel drive.
It’s great to drive thanks to its sharp handling and responsive powertrain and there are just two trim levels available: M Sport and M Sport Pro.
The 420i model is the most affordable and is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 181bhp and can hit 60mph in eight seconds.
Prices start at €80,035 while the M Sport Pro comes in at €90,783 and adds equipment such as 19-inch wheels and ambient interior lighting.
If you want something that is about making a fashion statement, you can’t go wrong with the Fiat 500e Convertible.
The 500e Convertible is wrapped up in a cutesy body with an electric folding canvas hood and is equipped with an electric powertrain.
Underneath, the car is fitted with a 42kWh battery pack and an electric motor to produce 116bhp and can travel up to a claimed 305km on a single charge.
Prices for an entry-level 500e Convertible Icon start at €26,145, making it one of the cheapest cars on this list.
The Mazda MX-5 needs no introduction as it’s one of the world’s most popular small, two-seater open-top sports cars.
The latest generation, officially known as the ‘ND’ MX-5, has been around since 2015 and has had minor nips and tucks over the years to keep it looking fresh.
There is a choice of a manually-foldable fabric roof, or an electrically-folding metal hardtop version called the RF.
The MX-5 provides one of the most entertaining driving experiences thanks to its short-throw gearbox, rear-wheel drive layout and perfect seating position.
Prices for an entry-level car come in at €39,890 while the RF models are priced at €42,390.
The Mercedes CLE Cabriolet is a direct rival to the BMW 4 Series Convertible, but offers a more comfort-focussed driving experience.
The CLE’s cabin is all about technology, while the four-seat layout makes it a more usable drop-top for everyday driving.
It’s available with several options including Mercedes’ ‘Airscarf’ which are little heater blowers located in the vehicle’s headrests to keep your neck warm when driving in cold conditions.
Prices for the CLE Cabriolet start at €83,945, putting it almost on par with its BMW rival.
The MG Cyberster is in a class of its own as it’s the only two-seat electric sports car on the market.
The Cyberster is about making a statement, thanks to its electric scissor-opening doors, bright exterior paint colours and the MG emblem representing a lot of British heritage.
Underneath, the car is fitted with a 77kWh battery pack, with a choice of a single electric motor to make rear-wheel drive or a dual-motor all-wheel drive variant. MG claims the former can travel up to 508km between trips to the plug and the latter will manage a claimed 444km
Prices start at €69,900 for the single motor version and rise to €75,500 for the all-wheel-drive dual motor.
The Mini Convertible is a fun, quirky and premium small drop-top.
The latest model continues the sustainability trend of the hatchback car with a 2D ‘knitted’ dashboard and recycled interior plastics.
It’s available in lots of different personalisation options and there is a sporty ‘Cooper S’ model that is fitted with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that makes 201bhp.
There is also a spicier ‘John Cooper Works’ model that boasts beefier exterior styling and a 228bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine.
The Convertible delivers the same go-kart characteristics as the standard car with its razor-sharp handling, sporty suspension and peppy powertrain.
The range starts at €43,330 for the entry-level model and rises to €59,220 for the hot John Cooper Works variant.
