The good news is that there are still plenty of alternatives to an SUV which provide space and comfort.

It’s hard to ignore the overwhelming popularity of SUVs. Reflected in the sheer number of options in the new car market, the interest in SUVs remains high. However, what if you don’t want to go down the SUV route, but fancy something a little different?

The good news is that there are still plenty of alternatives to an SUV which provide space and comfort. Let’s check them out.

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer

BMW shook things up when it returned to the MPV market with its 2 Series Active Tourer. With its boxy dimensions and practicality-forward design, the 2 Series Active Tourer typifies the MPV segment, but this makes it a great choice for space-conscious buyers.

Available with a range of efficient engines – including plug-in hybrid models that can deliver up to 86km of electric-only running – the 2 Series Active Tourer is a great alternative to your compact SUV model.

Volkswagen Multivan

If tip-top space is what you need, then Volkswagen’s Multivan should be on your list. It’s a large van-style model with space for up to seven people and a flexible, modular interior. Many of the Multivan’s seats can be removed to free up a huge amount of space, while a more luxurious six-seater version brings rotatable ‘captain’s chairs’ for a lounge-like experience.

As with others here, the Multivan is available with a series of engine options, including an efficient plug-in hybrid setup.

BYD Seal 6 Touring

BYD has quickly risen to become one of the most recognised electric car manufacturers around today, but it also dabbles in hybrids. Take the Seal 6 Touring, which is a sleek-looking estate car capable of delivering up to 100km of electric-only range from its plug-in hybrid setup.

With 675 litres of boot space, it’s also very practical, and, like other BYD models, it comes equipped with numerous clever technologies, including a 15.6-inch ‘floating’ infotainment display.

Audi A6 Avant

Audi has always known how to make big, comfortable and spacious estate cars and nowhere has that been more evident than with the A6 Avant. Traditionally the firm’s largest estate car, the A6 Avant continues to offer the practicality that you’d expect, while updates to the car’s interior mean it feels more tech-focused than ever.

You can also get the A6 as an electric vehicle in the battery-powered A6 e-tron, which brings a range of up to 715km.

Dacia Jogger

Dacia has always been the champion of value-focused cars and the Jogger is a fine example of this ethos. As a seven-seater MPV, it’s designed to prioritise practicality, with a hard-wearing interior that can handle the rough-and-tumble of daily life.

Don’t need seven seats? The rear two chairs can be removed entirely, freeing up a huge amount of boot space when required.

Kia PV5

Kia’s PV5 is here to rip up the rulebook when it comes to electric vehicles. As a spacious van-based people carrier, the PV5 sits on a brand new architecture which allows it to offer modular and flexible interior options.

It’s why you can get the PV5 as either a passenger or a cargo-based model.

A Long Range battery version can bring a range of up to 410km. While initially launching as a five-seater, six- and seven-seater models will join the line-up shortly.

Citroen Berlingo

The Berlingo has always been a family-focused model and nothing has changed for the latest model. There’s space for up to seven people in big XL models, though even standard versions offer a lot of room for five occupants inside to stretch out and get comfortable.

Because of its upright design, the Berlingo offers loads of interior headroom, too, while an electric version brings up to 342km of range from a charge.
