THE decision by the tobacco industry and others to abandon their challenge at the last minute to legislation that would enable the minister for health to ban advertising of tobacco products at point of sale underscores the cynicism of this industry.

I WRITE in response to Sean McKiernan’s letter (Irish Examiner, January 30) which echoed Michael McDowell’s view that even the smallest amount of cannabis is at the centre of a web of death and mayhem.

GIVEN the devastation that tobacco use inflicts on the health of those who smoke, the call by the Irish Medical Organisation for the minister for finance, to increase the excise duty on 20 cigarettes by €2 in the forthcoming budget is very welcome.
