New Zealand-born screenwriter Andrew Niccol has consistently conjured dark clouds with his dystopian visions of life in the 21st century and beyond.

The title says it all, really … a beastly, low-rate, poorly constructed and dismally acted twist on the classic 'Beauty and the Beast' story, with wooden characters we instantly dislike and a plot so poorly devised it stinks from start to finish.

A case of looting and pillaging through many of the previous sci-fi stories and films that yields precious little by way of originality, even though this film is based around a successful graphic novel.
