'Beastly' misses by a mile

Director: Daniel Barnz

Cast: Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Hudgens, Mary-Kate Olsen

The title says it all, really … a beastly, low-rate, poorly constructed and dismally acted twist on the classic 'Beauty and the Beast' story, with wooden characters we instantly dislike and a plot so poorly devised it stinks from start to finish.

The stiff and charmless Pettyfer is, laughingly, cast as the romantic lead in this teen drama, playing the self-regarding Kyle who sneers constantly at those less handsome and successful than himself … yeah, right!

The college witch (Olsen) casts a spell on him and turns him into an ugly monster – which he was anyway – and he can only find redemption if he finds true love, with the equally lifeless Hudgens.

If this effort is aimed at the teen market it misses by a mile.
