MID-AUGUST, 2012, I flew into Northern Ireland from Munich — a classic Irish day, lashing rain. I was 17. My flight was delayed, I’d forgotten my coat, I was wrecked.

I’d been selected to spend a week having master classes with musicians performing at the Clandeboye festival. But by mid-August I didn’t want to be there.
