I have learned the hard way about the invasive nature of bamboo. Years ago, my neighbour planted some on the garden boundary – and I have battled with it ever since, having limited success at keeping it contained.

Some experts suggest certain varieties are as invasive as the infamous Japanese knotweed. It can grow through cavity walls, bricks, drains and floors.
