I get very bloated and uncomfortable in the days before my period. Sometimes, it looks as if I’m pregnant. Is there a remedy I can take?

Bloating and fluid retention are common premenstrual symptoms experienced by many women, along with anxiety, mood swings, headaches, fatigue, breast tenderness, depression, insomnia, joint pain, skin problems, and lowered immunity. Certain remedies and lifestyle tweaks can reduce bloating and help you feel more comfortable around menstruation.

Premenstrual bloating is caused by an accumulation of fluid and gas, leading to the feelings you describe where the abdominal area can feel heavy, swollen, and uncomfortable. This is partly due to the gut microbiome responding to hormonal changes in your body, and it can be managed somewhat through dietary changes and supplementation.

One of the most important things you can do is ensure you are well-hydrated, as this helps flush out excess fluids and reduce bloating. You can supercharge your hydration by drinking herbal teas, such as peppermint, ginger, lemon balm, and fennel, to support digestive function and alleviate bloating.

Other beneficial herbs and supplements in reducing premenstrual bloating include dandelion root and evening primrose oil (EPO). Dandelion root acts as a diuretic, helping to eliminate excess fluid and alleviate bloating, while EPO is used to help regulate hormonal fluctuations and reduce gastric discomfort and bloating.

In the week before your period, make sure your diet primarily consists of whole foods and reduce or eliminate your intake of alcohol, caffeine, sugar, fried, and processed foods. Choosing potassium-rich foods like bananas and avocados can also help regulate fluid balance.

Stress is another factor worth considering as it can exacerbate premenstrual symptoms. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can help ease stress and promote overall well-being.

Getting an adequate amount of sleep is also essential in managing stress and reducing bloating associated with hormonal fluctuations.

My six-year-old picked up a verruca on her foot in the local swimming pool. Should I treat it or leave it to heal on its own?

Verrucae, also known as plantar warts, are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and can be stubborn to treat. It is common to pick up verrucae and fungal infections in the changing areas at swimming pools, gyms, and camping grounds. Since verrucae are contagious, it is a good idea to have your daughter wear flip-flops, slides, or Crocs when using public showers, bathrooms, and changing rooms.

Supporting the immune system is crucial as this will help her body fight off the infection.

Sambucol makes a specific formulation called ImmunoForte using black elderberry (Sambucus nigra) along with vitamin C and zinc to strengthen immune function. Immunoforte liquid is suitable for ages three and over — your daughter will need to take 5ml, which can be taken up to four times daily when she needs increased support.

Topically, Oreganum (oregano) essential oil is one of the most potent antiviral oils. Apply a single drop of the essential oil and cover the affected area with a plaster. Other essential oils to treat verrucae include tea tree, manuka, and lavender.

Essential oils can take a long time to work. However, they will help to keep the area clean and minimise the chance of spreading. Ensure any oils you buy are 100% pure therapeutic grade and not fragrant oils.

If the verruca persists or worsens, consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and treatment options.
