BBL, SPF and more: The hottest beauty trends and treatments you need to know about for spring
The Irish Examiner’s SS24 beauty cheatsheet
Skincare needs to change with the seasons. And while that, in itself, feels taxing, the best thing about creeping into the warmer months is that less is certainly more.
Wave goodbye to the thick waxy masques of December nights, and hello to fresh, sparkling treatments and products. Here are the best ones out there right now.
It actually doesn’t matter what SPF you use, once you use one. Anthelios by La Roche-Posay is widely regarded to be the best out there, with some 10 years and 60 scientific studies put into making it. But it’s their latest addition, which offers broad spectrum protection while also mattifying oily skin, that has changed the game.
It contains ingredients such as salicylic acid, niacinamide and zinc to unclog pores, correct imperfections, soothe inflammation and reduce excess sebum, while also leaving zero white cast, meaning it’s suitable for every skin tone.

Not everyone likes the brighter months. I know the fear of exposing body parts that usually live under thick clothing. For me, I tend to feel a little nervous about going about bare-faced in the summer, given that I have acne scars, pigmentation, patchy veins and blood blisters.
However, there are ways you can dramatically change these things if they do bother you. I recently tried BBL in aNuMe, Cork, and was blown away at how different my skin looked after one session. All the pigmentation I had on my face was gone, including the spider veins around my nose and acne scars around my chin. I’ve been having no make-up days far more regularly since, and recommending it to everyone I know.

This is the sort of product that people tell you about before you even ask. An anti-frizz treatment that entirely waterproofs your hair to stop frizz, Dream Coat leaves even the most unforgiving curls glossy and smooth. One to consider when fighting with the hairbrush come summertime.

As we said before, time is money during the warmer months. So, consider us thrilled to share TanOrganic’s latest two-in-one; the anti-ageing facial tan serum.
TanOrganic is what I recommend to anyone who has ever broken out by way of fake tan before, as the ingredients are 90% organic and it’s also quite affordable for what you’re getting. Also, for anyone worried about waking up totally orange, you needn’t be. Think of it less as a fake tan and more as a serum with the slightest hint of tint.

Speaking of fake tan, this is the summer tan to beat. Lightweight, non-sticky and one of the only tans out there to not stain your bedsheets, Bare by Vogue’s Clear Tan Water is outstanding. I know a lot of people prefer a tint to their tan to give them a guide on where to put it, but I guarantee after one use of this, you’ll never go back.

An oldie but a goodie, this Chloé perfume fell into my lap in recent weeks and reminded me of just how much I love it. It’s light and fresh while also being powerful, and lingers all day without being overpowering. It also now comes in a new 100ml refillable bottle.

To protect chapped lips from further damage and sunburn, SPF is a non-negotiable. Ultra Violette’s silky smooth lip balm boasts factor 50 sun protection, as well as lanolin and plant butters to deeply hydrate and seal moisture in the lips.

I’ve harped on about this product before, but there’s a reason it’s been repeatedly sold out since its launch last winter. The Universal Glow Treatment is a primer/highlighter/colour corrector and illuminator all in one — and looks so beautifully fresh on the skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and reduces redness, giving you the best glow all day. I will be wearing this all summer long.

I’ve always been too much of a commitment phobe for hair extensions. However, a new Irish brand has changed my mind. Cascata, created by one of Ireland’s most sought-after hairstylists Emma King, is a selection of clip-in real hair pieces which cater to anyone with fine or thinning hair. They’re very easy and very undetectable.

The months in the run-up to summer are quite cool and can lead to skin appearing dull and dry. For this the Ultraceuticals Ultra Gentle Exfoliating Gel is brilliant. To be used on the face and body, this simply buffs away any dead skin cells while also bringing blood flow to the surface.
They also have a great facial exfoliator, the Ultra Granule-C Microfoliant, which features micro-fine and absorbable Ascorbic Acid (pure Vitamin C) if your face needs extra attention.
