Tom Jones at LATM: He’s still got it

Tom Jones took to the stage with charm, charisma and a fine set of lungs for his one night only at Live At The Marquee.

It was an all seated event but that didn’t keep the crowds contained with groups getting up for a jive in the corridors every chance they got.

The entire front section got to their feet for a number of the classic hits including ‘It’s not unusual’, ‘Delilah’ ‘Sex bomb’ and ‘The green green grass of home’.

The set included a number of soul, gospel and rock and roll numbers that showed off the full range of Mr Jones bombastic vocal chords.

The singer, who lost his wife of 59 years this year played ‘Take My Love’ from his new album ‘Long Lost Suitcase’ that he said his late wife had liked very much.

A nine piece musical ensemble accompanied Mr Jones on stage as he crooned through his set, stopping occasionally to converse with the crowd, telling stories about his time in Las Vegas with the infamous King of Rock Elvis Presley for whom he played ‘Elvis Presley Blues’.

The mostly middle-aged crowd were eager to show their enthusiasm for the international star with an assortment of knickers being thrown on to the stage throughout the night.

The 76-year-old rock and roll popstar finished off his set with a nod to the late Prince by playing the hit ‘Kiss’ in his encore, but not before the masses had risen from their seats and gathered around the stage.

There they stayed dancing and singing with smartphone screens glaring as close up snaps were taken by rambunctious fans until Mr Jones finished off his final soulful number and walked off stage.

It was a great night with a number of hits played by the popular singer and an eclectic mix of genres to keep the crowds entertained until the last note.

There did seem to be some disconcertment regarding the seating arrangements as many complained they would have liked room to dance, however most went home happy after a night of good music and fun.
