Ireland's ugly racial underbelly revealed tonight in 'I Am Immigrant' on RTÉ2
Racism, riots and fighting on the Luas all feature in tonight’s hard-hitting documentary 'I Am Immigrant' on RTÉ2.
A follow on from 'I Am Traveller' the documentary is an intimate portrayal of young immigrants and reveals an ugly underbelly of Irish society, where incidents of racial abuse towards minorities are relatively common.
The show documents immigrants subject to varying levels of abuse from childhood taunts to violent assault.
Over the course of a number of weeks, a documentary team, directed by Luke Manus and produced by Motive Television, follows a number of Irish immigrants, and documents the daily challenges, as they see them, through their eyes.
Jobstown’s mixed race Shayla now moves happily between white Irish society and an Afro beat sub-culture and from Tallaght, Boni is determined to be the best immigrant he can be and set an example for other Nigerian Irish living here by trying to become the first black Student Union President.
The documentary crew also follow the fortunes of the Chairman of Pegida Ireland and Identity Ireland Founder, Peter O'Loughlin as he campaigns on an anti-mass migration ticket in the recent general election.
The cameras are present when Peter and his fellow Pegida members are assaulted on the LUAS as they make their way to launch the Irish branch of Pegida outside the GPO.
First generation Adam is keen to educated the Irish public on Islam and believes that being Irish and Muslim are not mutually exclusive.
When he witnesses the furore at the Pegida Launch in O’Connell street he is moved by the support for Islam, but believes violence and mayhem is not the solution.
I Am Immigrant the second of a three part documentary series exploring identity in Ireland today and airs on tonight, Thursday, March 31 at 9.30pm on RTÉ2.
