Five for your radar: Sirat in cinemas, Cork French Film Festival and Choice Prize

The final four episodes of season four are out now. Part 1 ended on a cliffhanger (spoiler alert): Benedict asked hardworking maid Sophie: “Be my mistress?” She fled without giving an answer.
Luke Thompson, who plays the second son, says: “It’s a very different Benedict that we see in Part 2.” Meanwhile Lady Whistledown, Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) finds herself in the queen’s inner circle.

Nominated for two Academy Awards (Best International Feature Film and Best Sound), on top of claiming the joint jury prize at Cannes Film Festival last year, Oliver Laxe’s finally gets a release in Irish cinemas. The plot — a father, accompanied by his son, goes looking for his missing daughter in North Africa — sounds relatively simple but that’s just the start of it.

The 37th edition of the festival includes Cesar-nominated features and award-winning shorts. The Cork premiere of on Monday will be followed by a Q&A with the director, Regis Wargnier. Angelina Jole stars in her first French-speaking role in Alice Winocour’s while a tribute to the late Brigitte Bardot will see Academy Award-nominated legal drama screened.

Last seen in Cork playing Live at the Marquee as a guest with Joe Bonamassa during his three sold-out Rory Gallagher tribute shows last July, Gerry McAvoy returns with his own Band of Friends. It’s part of a four-date Irish tour celebrating Rory’s 78th birthday. A new line-up of Band of Friends includes guitarist Brian Tambling, who grew up in Cork. Expect all the classics and plenty more.

The annual celebration of Irish music — which will end with the best album of 2025 being crowned — will see seven acts perform over the course of the evening. Amble, Joshua Burnside, CMAT (solo), Junior Brother, Just Mustard, pôt-pot, and Sprints are all confirmed (the other nominees, unable to attend, are Bricknasty, Maria Somerville, and Dove Ellis). The show will also be broadcast live on RTÉ 2FM with Beta Da Silva from 7pm-11pm.
