Cork Film Festival reveals opening film for 2024 event
Ralph Fiennes stars as Cardinal Lawrence in Clonclave, the opening film of Cork International Film Festival 2024.
Cork International Film Festival has revealed its opening film and announced the documentary for the Irish Gala presentation.
The festival, which runs November 7-17, will open with psychological thriller Conclave, set around the election of a new pope. A star-studded cast includes Ralph Fiennes as the cardinal charged with organising the high-powered gathering, while other familiar faces include Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini.
There’s an Irish presence in the adaptation of Robert Harris’s novel through Brían F O'Byrne as Monsignor Raymond O'Malley, and the Cavan actor is expected to attend the screening at the Everyman.
The Irish Gala on Sunday, November 10, will be Blue Road: The Edna O’Brien Story, a documentary on the celebrated author who died earlier this year. Killarney actress Jessie Buckley narrates a film that includes an interview with O’Brien recorded shortly before her death, as well as contributions from her family and friends.

Further details of the 69th Cork Film Festival’s programme will be announced in the coming weeks.
Fiona Clark, CEO and director of the festival, said: “These films are indicative of the exciting range of premieres that CIFF boasts, and the wealth of Irish and international filmmaking talent that our 69th year will be showcasing.
“Additionally, we’re delighted to welcome our new director of programming Aurélie Godet, who brings her talent from Berlinale and Locarno now to Cork! We are excited for audiences to experience Aurélie’s auspicious first Cork International Film Festival programme."
Tickets for both of the announced films are on sale via corkfilmfest.org
