Eamon Dunphy 'may not vote' in Eighth Amendment referendum
Eamon Dunphy has spoken about how conflicted he is with regard to Friday's referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment
Speaking on last night’s The Tonight Show on TV3, Dunphy went on to reveal that he may not vote on the issue.
"I am reluctant. I may not vote no. I may not vote," he said.
"I'm reluctant because I believe abortion is a very, very serious procedure. I believe that you're looking at two lives, the mother and the child.
I feel a doubt and a struggle. Who am I to tell a woman with a serious health problem and a child what to do?
Dubphy said he is in favour of allowing abortion in certain cases, but feels the legislation proposed by the government is a step too far.
"For example, I would be in favour of abortion for people with fatal foetal abnormalities, the victims of rape or incest, if that was possible.
"In other words, a restrictive but humane approach, but the legislation proposed, up to 12 weeks and then maybe in certain cases further on down the line, for me, I don't believe that.
I believe that life is precious, it’s a feeling I have as much as anything.
Viewers at home were divided by his unclear opinions on the referendum.
Today John Bruton said that the No side was hypocritical and he's OK with that. Tonight Eamon is saying his own opinion is illogical and he's OK with that. Well a lot of us aren't OK with it, any of it. #tonighttv3

Eamon Dunphy is right about the fact that the 8th Amendment should never have been added to our Constitution. That is one of the main reasons we need to #Repeal8th. #tonightTV3

Eamon Dunphy: ‘my position is totally illogical’ That just about sums it up. #tonighttv3

Easy to attack Dunphy on @TonightShowTV3 for being inconsistent and all over the place on the #8thRef. But he’s actually closer to much of the electorate than strident Yes and No campaigners. And people who are somewhat conflicted are the ones who’ll decide this. #TonightTv3

By the time the referendum comes around, Eamon Dunphy will have changed his mind at least another 500 times. #tonighttv3
