Daniel Van Duren was in a building less than one kilometre away from the blast site and he managed to film what is the clearest view yet of the two explosions that shook the port city, where fires are still burning.

He writes:

"We were on the top of a 33 story building watching the shooting stars, but we witnessed the whole explosion. So we had to run down the whole 33 levels and escape."

The explosions were so big that they registered as seismic activity. An official from China's National Earthquake Network told the BBC that scientists were "alarmed" at the scale of the explosions.

The shockwaves from the first explosion were equivalent to detonating three tonnes of TNT while the magnitude of the second explosion was equal to 21 tonnes of TNT.

The blasts were also visible from space - a Chinese agency released satellite photos of the area with the explosions showing as white spot. .
