A small Dachshund named Razor is being hailed as a hero after helping to rescue his friend - a St. Bernard called Jazzy - who got herself stuck in two feet of mud.

Jazzy had escaped his enclosure in Belen, New Mexico and ended up falling into a nearby muddy ditch. It was left to Razor to get help.

Razor and Jazzy's owner Tim Chavez said he noticed that Razor was acting strangely but had to go to work.

“I went to feed him, and he was kind of going crazy, trying to get my attention,” Chavez said.

After he left, Razor became even more agitated. Eventually, a neighbour noticed the dog's distress and the Dachshund led him across a field to where Jazzy was stuck.

Police and fire fighters were called and the St. Bernard was pulled from the mud - dirty but unharmed. It is believed she was stuck there for 18 hours.

“It’s never happened in my career, and in this business, we see a lot of things. This is the first time that we participated in something like this,” Belen Fire Chief Manny Garcia told KRQE News.

The Belen City Council plans to honour Razor for his actions at their next meeting.
