Photobomb, Tinder, normcore and bakeoff - the English language is a beautiful thing.

'Photobomb' named Collins English Dictionary Word of the Year

Drum roll please and lay out the red carpet. The Collin's Dictionary Word of the Year have been announced. And this year the top place goes to that incomparable and evocative word… photo bomb.

Yes, it's been the year of the photobomb according to the Dictionary people - who have officially defined it as intruding"into the background of a photograph without the subject's knowledge'.

And, indeed, the photobomb garnered international attention after the Queen of England herself photobombed one of her 'subjects' during this year's Commonwealth Games.

Here are Collins' top five words of 2014:

1. Photobomb: To intrude into the background of a photograph without the subject's knowledge.

2. Tinder: The dating app Tinder matches users in their local area, who swipe right to like a profile and left to reject it.

3. Bakeoff: A baking competition.

4. Normcore: A trend in fashion emphasizing the practical and/or ordinary.

5. Devo Max: An arrangement in which a central government transfers the maximum amount of authority to a regional government while still retaining sovereignty over it.

The English language just gets more and more beautiful, doesn’t it?
