DOCUMENTARY: Vets in the Disaster Zone (BBC2, 9pm – 10pm)

In November last year, Southeast Asia – particularly the Philippines – was devastated by tropical cyclone Typhoon Yolanda.

With winds of up to 230mph, it killed over 6,000 people in that country alone, and another 4.1 million were left homeless, triggering a huge humanitarian aid operation.

Now, five months on, Michael Mosley travels to the Philippines to explore the disaster from the perspective of the animals caught up in the crisis, as well as meet the specialist team of vets who have saved lives.

Michael hears how these experts have not only provided second-to-none veterinary care, but also put in place technology that may save millions of animals should disaster strike again.

It’s a tribute to the tireless work of experts who not only want to ensure the animals survive, but hope to improve animal welfare in the long term.

“The typhoon did a great deal of damage, but it could, in the end do a great deal of good,” explains Mosley.

As staffers battle to save the Funday attractions, Teresa’s (Helen O’Brien) Schoolgirl Crush,

‘Showband Star’ St John Mullally (Steve Wall), turns up as the ‘Celebrity Guest’ at the ruined ‘Family Fun Day’, causing a romantic stand-off with Amanda (Yasmine Akram).

FILM: The Sweetest Thing (ITV2, 10pm)

(2002) Sexy young thing Christina has managed to navigate the dating scene without ever engaging in a meaningful relationship.

Then she comes to the blinding realisation that her latest conquest might be The One. Unfortunately, he has left town and Christina and her friends embark on a mission to track him down – and en route a series of misadventures teaches them that love is the sweetest thing.

This is an effervescent sex comedy with little in the way of originality. Thank goodness, then, for Cameron Diaz, who’s on sparkling form here. Just a bit more work on the screenplay, and it could have been a classic. Nevertheless, there are enough laughs to keep viewers interested.

Starring: Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate, Selma Blair, Thomas Jane, Jason Bateman, Parker Posey

FILM: Smokin’ Aces (ITV, Regions Vary)

(2007) This comedy drama revolves around popular but decadent Las Vegas showman magician Buddy ’Aces’ Israel, a one-time Mafia member and wannabe gangster, agreeing to spill the beans on mob boss Primo Sparazza to the FBI.

When the crime lord discovers this betrayal he dispatches a multitude of assassins, mercenaries and psychos to bump off Israel and claim his heart, with a 1million price tag on the performer’s head.

It soon becomes a race against time as the bounty hunters all put their opposing plans into action, while FBI agents Messner and Carruthers try to get there first and save the imperilled snitch.

However, things aren’t as clear as they seem, and Sparazza’s motives might not be so straightforward.

While it’s entertaining and quick-paced, it’s less than the sum of its many parts.

Starring: Jeremy Piven, Ray Liotta, Ryan Reynolds, Alicia Keys, Taraji Henson, Jason Bateman, Ben Affleck
