Jessie J - Raunchy pop vids just a passing fad

Singer Jessie J has dismissed concerns about sexualised pop music videos - saying that they will not be here to stay.

The 'Price Tag' star said that a new generation of singers will do things differently.

Speaking at Britain's Royal Variety Performance, where she performed last night, the 25-year-old said that the music industry would change.

Her comments come after singer Annie Lennox criticised a “recent spate of overtly sexualised performances and videos” and accused record companies of “peddling highly styled pornography with musical accompaniment”, while Sinead O’Connor penned an open letter to Miley Cyrus following her notorious routine at the MTV VMAs ceremony.

The former Voice coach said: “I think that pop culture moves and changes. It has its moments of greatness and its moments of weirdness...shock value and beauty.

“I always know that as a female artist you can’t do anything until you test it. Until you test it, you don’t know if it’s going to work or not. I’ve been there and done it and thought maybe I don’t want to do that again.

“The music industry’s constantly evolving and changing. There are many artists coming through who are about vocals. That’s what I’m trying to stand for.”

She added: “It can’t go that way, not for the younger generation coming up. There needs to be a levelling, a responsibility from everyone.”

The pop star performed new single 'Thunder' at the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium and said that the Prince of Wales had asked to meet her at the event.

“He asked to meet me... I guess he wants to meet me...I’d like to think he is a fan. That or I’m in trouble,” she said.

She said of performing at the show: “It feels like you’ve got a sense of responsibility as a British artist to fulfil the standard.

“I feel like I’m going back in time. I used to do musical theatre. It’s like I’m doing an audition and Prince Charles is saying ’you’re through to the next round’.”

The Royal Variety Performance took place last night and will be screened on Monday December 9 on ITV.
