‘Enter the Void’ graphic yet uninteresting

French director Noe has unfortunately fallen for his own, self-created image as the go-to guy for innovative, screen-expanding controversy.

If you saw – survived – his 2002 film ‘Irreversible’, infamous for its rape and sex scenes and overly-complex camera work, you will see where we’re going with this. He’s not as clever as he thinks.

This one is certainly controversial, but mostly for the fact that Noe hasn’t learned anything or if he did from 2002 he has decided not to bring it to us, merely repeat the early gimmicks.

Nathaniel Brown, not the most compelling of actors, plays junkie Oscar who is murdered in the garishly neon-lit district of Tokyo and who returns as a ghost to keep an eye on his stripper sister Linda (de la Huerta).

The idea of using Oscar’s eyes as the camera doesn’t work, we hardly see his face so we are never fully involved in the drama, which, anyway, is merely more of Noe’s hallucinations and insistence on piling on the scenes of sex and drugs and anything else that is graphic … but not, curiously, interesting.
