Back in the early l970s Melvin Van Peebles, father of Mario, made the highly-regarded Sweet Sweetback's Badass Song.

Now Mario has made this film about his father making his film (with Thomas playing the young Van Peebles).

It's a story of obsession and it traces all the ups and downs, all the triumphs and tragedies, of independent moviemaking.

In young Thomas we have a lad who just can't hack what should be a key role.

It could have been so much better, though it remains powerful enough.
