Former S Club star Rachel Stevens has furiously defended pop music - insisting it isn't a "dirty word".

The Sweet Dreams My LA Ex singer, 26, dismisses critics who believe only "serious" musicians have a right be in the charts.

Stevens says: "Pop should never be a dirty word, and I don't agree that you need to grow up in a garage with a guitar making your fingers bleed in order to be considered a musician.

"Just because you've come from a pop background it doesn't mean you have no right to make music."

Stevens - who enjoyed a string of hits with the British chart-topping band - is keen to carve out a successful solo career.

She adds: "I suppose I've always wanted it. I'm a very determined person, and you always have to look to the future."
