Le Brocquy’s Sick Tinker Child on sale

A MAJOR painting from le Brocquy’s celebrated Tinker series will lead the 23 Irish works at Sotheby’s sale of British and Irish art in London on December 10.

Estimated at £200,000-£300,000, Sick Tinker Child is the second largest of the series and was painted in the 1940s.

Travelling Woman with Newspaper sold for £1.15 million at Sotheby’s in 2000. An exhibition of the Irish artworks in the sale will take place at Sotheby’s Irish office at Molesworth St. in Dublin from November 28-30.

There are five works by Louis le Brocquy, amongst others including PaulHenry’s, The Fishing Fleet, which comes to the market for the first time and is estimated at £80,000-£120,000.

A 1918 portrait of Vivien St. George by William Orpen is the only known portrait by Orpen of the daughter that resulted from his love affair with Mrs Evelyn St George.

The portrait has remained within the family and is estimated at £60,000-£80,000. Orpen’s portrait of Gardenia with Riding Crop sold for £1.9m at Sotheby’s in 2001.

Viewing in Dublin is from 10am to 5.30pm on November 28 and 10am to 4pm on November 29 and 30.
