Music of Freedom on the cards for Carrigtwohill auction

This early Irish Georgian dining table is at Lynes and Lynes in Carrigtwohill on July 26. Also up for sale is a copy of ‘The Music of Freedom’ by patriot Terence MacSwiney.

AN early Irish-Georgian section dining table, and a signed copy of The Music of Freedom, by patriot, author and playwright, Terence MacSwiney — who died on hunger strike in Brixton prison in 1920, while Lord Mayor of Cork — are among the items to tempt at the next Lynes and Lynes auction in Carrigtwohill on July 26.

The table comes from the estate of the late Mrs M Timmons, at No 2, The Mall, Compass Hill, Kinsale. Measuring 9ft long and 4ft wide, it dates from 1740-60 and is estimated at €2,000-€2,500. A late-Georgian sideboard, from the same room, is also in the sale.

The Music of Freedom dates to 1907 and was printed by The Risen Gaedhael Press, in Cork.

Meanwhile, an Irish four-poster bed, by Williams and Gibton, c1820, and a flame mahogany wardrobe, are each estimated at €2,000-€2,500.

There are two Victorian Chesterfield settees, with estimates of just €300-€500 each. A Georgian secretaire, probably made in Cork and in need of refurbishment, is estimated at €200-€300.

A pair of c1830 Irish side cabinets, with marble tops, are estimated at €4,000-€6,000.

The sale offers a rich selection of easy chairs, side-tables and bedroom furniture, including a Victorian wardrobe and old chests of drawers. A Regency sofa table is estimated at €1,000-€1,500, a gilt overmantle at €1,200-€1,500, and a Sheraton settee at €200-€400.

There are interesting early views of Cork, Kinsale, and Youghal dating to around 1750, as well as a similarly dated map of Cork city.

Collectibles include china and glassware. Viewing is from 10am to 8pm on July 24-25 and the auction is at 11am next Saturday.
