Life Hack: Can I use a dishwasher tablet to clean my microwave?

Need some cleaning shortcuts when it comes to your microwave?
Over the years in this column, we have looked at many ways that a dishwasher tablet can clean other appliances and stains. They are a go-to for big jobs like oven cleaning and getting your washing machine sparkling, as well as unexpected tasks like unclogging sinks.
A reader recently got in touch to ask if a dishwasher tablet could also be used to clean a microwave and the answer is yes. To do this, dissolve a dishwasher tablet in a bowl of hot water. Dip a microfibre cloth into the mixture, squeeze it to remove excess liquid and apply it to the inside of the microwave, scrubbing when needed to remove food residue.
This method is particularly effective to remove grease from your microwave which can build up after food splatters when being heated.
Of course, there are plenty of cleaning options available if you want to deep-clean your microwave. Another kitchen multitasker is vinegar, which can easily cut through grease and grime. Simply spray some white vinegar inside the microwave and let it sit for 15 minutes. Using a microfibre cloth, wipe the vinegar away and give the interior a final wipe with a damp cloth to remove the last of the vinegar.
Often the simplest options are the best when it comes to cleaning, which is why washing up liquid should not be sniffed at for jobs like this. While you can apply a mixture of this and water directly to the surface, it may leave some residue. Instead, add some washing-up liquid to a microwave-safe bowl of water. Heat the mixture in the microwave for two minutes — this creates steam that will coat the inside of the machine. Let it sit for five minutes before carefully removing the bowl (which will be hot). Wipe down the interior of the microwave for a shiny result.
Alternatively, immerse a clean sponge in water and add a few drops of washing-up liquid to its surface. Microwave the sponge for two minutes, wait a few more minutes to allow it to cool, and wipe the inside of the microwave with the sponge.
Finally, don’t overlook your trusty bicarbonate of soda/baking soda for stubborn food stains. If you need to tackle a dried-in spill, you can make a paste from bicarbonate of soda and water. Apply the paste to the spill and wait for five minutes so it soaks into the stain. Wipe the paste — and the dried-in food — away with a cloth. The bonus result of this method is that it is unlikely you will need to scrub at the mark to remove it.
