Top 8: The best value Easter eggs for children priced at €6 and under
Roz Crowley with the help of her expert taste testers pick the top 8 easter eggs you can get for under €6
Easter eggs are all about the children, right? Yet, we buy half-dark, half-milk eggs, streaked with crunchy bits, spots, stripes, and coloured icing, when what all they (and many adults) really want is an egg made of milk chocolate.
So, with a focus on children this year, I enlisted my granddaughter Bea to help me, not just to taste eggs, but to buy them too.
To find the best value, we set a budget of €6, and surprisingly, she wasn’t even tempted by the larger eggs. In fact, she wasn’t interested in the chocolate egg shell. It was about what’s inside. Her tasting schoolfriends were in agreement, and simply wanted an excuse to eat a whole packet or a bar of their favourite sweets.
So, we went around supermarket chains and found many of the same brands in most of them, with some offering two for the price of one two weeks ago. Prices may have altered since then, so check before buying.
Make sure to look at the price per kilo (in far too small text at the bottom line of the larger shelf prices) for the best value. We were shocked to find that Lindt Bugs & Bees Truffles cost €100/kg. Kinder Surprise Maxi 100g egg at Tesco online is €85/kg (€64.90/kg in Lidl).
Our Top 8 shows the best value for our tasters’ preferences.

Before we started shopping, Bea said this is the one everyone wants this year, because it has nine delicious mini solid eggs with a crisp sugar coating. The 25% cocoa solids in the mini eggs are more delicious than the 20% cocoa solids in the shell. Later in Dunnes, we found a 1kg bag of Cadbury mini eggs for a fair €20. Good value egg at the saver deal price. The team’s winner.

No big egg here, just a packet of 14 sugar-coated eggs, which are delicious. A sugar coating provides a sweet crunch, enclosing flavoursome 34% cocoa solids milk chocolate, which the girls said were rich and creamy (though they weren’t interested in knowing anything about the percentage of cocoa solids). A very close second for the team. They also loved the 27 M&S choccy eggs 130g €4.25 €32.69/kg.

This was the top scorer for one taster who loves these chewy sweets, with the general consensus that this proper pack of pastilles was definitely worth buying. They noted quite a difference in the taste of the chocolate shell to Cadbury’s – much richer here. Cocoa solids of 25% may account for the fairly rich taste.
- Score: 9

Seven solid mini eggs are made from milk chocolate with 32% cocoa solids and hazelnut paste, while the shell has a higher 35% cocoa solids. The nutty flavour works well and adds to the richness of the mini eggs. The chocolate shell has good chocolate flavour too. A satisfying egg and fair value.

The white creamy filling tasted of just that, of creamy sweetness. Nice quality chocolate with a fair 30% cocoa solids, which reminded one of the girls of Kinder eggs. The favourite of the mini eggs for one taster. We bought in Tesco.
- Score: 8.5

Two tasters said they could taste a Milky Way bar in the egg shell, which was a plus for them. The shell has 25% cocoa solids, giving it a richness that they liked. Made by Mars. The enclosed bar was a plus. Fair value at the two-for-one deal.
- Score: 7.5

A larger egg by comparison to the others in this selection. The pack of 17 minstrels were quickly consumed, though one taster was not impressed by the oversweetness of the shell. Others also complained about the sweetness of the KitKat egg, despite having 25% cocoa solids. They also thought that the Celebrations egg was too sweet.
- Score: 7

One small crunchie in the box left tasters unimpressed, but when one taster tried the chocolate egg said, “Wait, that’s good!” However, another thought was that there was an odd aftertaste, which could be accounted for by unspecified ‘flavourings’ listed on the packaging. Cocoa solids are 20%, delivering a less-than-creamy mouthfeel.
