The Menu is in the full throes of festival fever and first port of call is the Galway International Oyster Festival (Sept 25-27).

It begins with the National Oyster Opening Championships on Friday followed by the World Championships on Saturday and Féile na Mara — Wild Atlantic Tastes Sunday Family Day ( ).

The Macroom Food Festival (Sept 25-27) kicks off with a tasting menu and entertainment at the Riverside Park Hotel and the Sunday food market is always worth a visit, ( ).

Taste of Togher (Sept 26), in Co Louth, offers free admission with a wide range of local products to sample, cookery demos and their Chowder of the Year competition ( ).

A Maritime Menu shall be cavorting around the wonderful bonded warehouses of the Port of Cork this weekend, enjoying wonderful food in Rocketman Jack Crotty’s contribution to the superb Sounds from a Safe Harbour festival, a pop-up restaurant in one of the gorgeous old bonded warehouses, trading under the name, BAIT at B8, also reflecting the seafood themes for the weekend, beginning last night with Menu favourite Rory O’Connell and Caitlin Ruth, of Deasy’s Harbour Bar tonight (Sept 19) while a reprise of the very excellent seafood outdoor market along the quayside sees another august gathering of fine local stalls and very family-friendly on-water activities, including the Meitheal Mara Inter-Firm Dragon Boat Race ( ).


The Hook & Ladder Cookery School, with branches in Waterford and Limerick, and numbering the excellent Deise pairing of chefs Michael Quinn and Daithi Larkin amongst their tutors, are launching a Cookery Book Club, in which they run a class around a well-known book each month.

First up is Tom Kerridge’s Best Ever Dishes (Sept 29) while upcoming classes on Classical French Cuisine and Artisan Breadmaking also caught The Menu’s eye ( ).
