Disconnected drinking water resulted in 14 cattle dying last month

A total of 14 cows have died following their water supply being disconnected during the hottest July on record.

Coolmore said it has begun a disciplinary process after the death of 14 cattle after access to drinking water was disconnected.

The incident occurred on a Coolmore-owned farm and was immediately reported to the Department of Agriculture on July 28.

A spokesperson for Coolmore, who confirmed the incident, said the deaths were “very regrettable” and were a result of “human error” as drinking water was temporarily disconnected to clean water troughs.

The spokesperson said there was a failure “to reconnect supplies and monitor the cattle in a timely manner,” resulting in the deaths of the 14 young animals during the hottest July on record.

“Everyone in Coolmore is deeply, deeply upset by what occurred, and immediate steps were taken to prevent anything like this from ever happening again,” the spokesperson explained.

Coolmore have said there is an ongoing disciplinary process.
