A fifth highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed this week.
Another turkey flock, located in Co Cavan, was confirmed to have an outbreak of HPAI on December 1. As a consequence, restriction zones have been put in place around the holding, resulting in a 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone.
This is the fifth outbreak of HPAI since the introduction of strict biosecurity measures which were made mandatory on November 1. This most recent outbreak is also the fifth turkey flock to go down with the disease.
Previous outbreaks in turkey flocks have occurred in Co Laois, Co Monaghan, Co Meath, and Co Carlow.
Flock owners are asked to remain vigilant for any sign of disease and report any suspicions of avian flu to their local veterinary office.
Members of the public are also being advised not to handle sick or dead wild birds and to report them via the department's AvianCheck app.
