There will be no early help for fruit and vegetable growers who say they are being asked to sell to supermarkets at a greatly reduced price.
When Minister for European Affairs and Meath East Fine Gael TD Helen McEntee raised their plight in the Dáil last week, Agriculture Minister Michael Creed said the Government has undertaken public consultation transposing the EU’s unfair trading directive into domestic law by May, 2021.
“That is how we will protect consumers and provide financial support for the horticulture sector.”
EU farmers and co-ops say there has been an increase in unfair trade practices during the Covid-19 pandemic, especially for perishable fruit and vegetables.
