Farm show in Charleville sets sights on sheaf tossing record
The sheaf toss, which dates back to the Medieval Ages as a farming competition, will take place at 2 pm on Sunday.
It will be one of the novelty highlights of the 37th annual show, which will be officially opened at 1 pm on Saturday by Agriculture Minister Michael Creed.
The cost of staging the first show in 1979 was €22,000. Last year, the figure was in excess of €200,000.
Charleville Show — which attracts the country’s top cattle exhibitors and is a noted shop window for quality young horses — now covers 70 acres.
It will features classes for sheep, horticulture, dogs, arts and crafts, cookery and children’s competitions, a best dressed family competition, a vintage section, entertainment and trade stands with a 1916 theme.
Chosen at “Show of the Year” in 2013, it is organised by a committee headed by Cllr Ian Doyle, chairman, with support from Kerry Agribusiness and a wide range of other sponsors.
