Technology: Mower for all uses from scrub to stubble clearance
A heavy-duty mower designed to do the work of a flail mower, while requiring a fraction of the power and fuel — that’s the Major 2.5m Cyclone Mower, which was launched at the Ploughing Championships last September.
Farmers got another chance to see it in action recently, at demonstrations in various locations in the west of Ireland.
“In heavy conditions, a 2.5m flail mower could require as much as 120hp to drive it,” explained Martin Walsh, Sales Manager with Major Equipment.
“The Cyclone works easily at 80-100hp.
“Ground speed in gorse would typically be 1mph to 2mph with a flail mower, whereas it would be between 5mph and 8mph in heavy going with the Cyclone,”
The Cyclone Mower also offers potential fuel savings in heavy conditions of 30-35% versus the flail mower.
These machines are specifically designed for use in set-aside, forestry margin management, and sensitive environmental scrubland control.
Strenx 700 MC high-strength steel is used in manufacture of the Cyclone.
This material is stronger than steel traditionally used in machinery manufacturing.
The undersole discs are produced from Hardox® 450, a wear and abrasion resistant steel.
The aim is to cope with the toughest of conditions, including shrub, saplings, gorse and brush — as well as clearance of arable stubble, including maize and rapeseed crops.
The Cyclone Mower can be front or rear mounted (to be specified at order).
It has a patented inter-gearbox drive system, and is fitted with impact shock reducing swinging hardened spring steel blades. Included is a heavy duty rear roller.
The machine has less wearing parts than a flail mower.
