New fodder scheme applications open
Forms will also be available from Teagasc offices where advisers will continue to provide one-to-one advice to farmers impacted by flooding.
The closing date for applications will be January 22 with the objective of ensuring swift payments.
Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney said the scheme will target farmers impacted by flooding.
These farmers will be offered support based on the replacement costs of fodder damaged on their holding.
He said he had witnessed first-hand the significant difficulties and losses experienced by farmers in areas flooded.
“I am committed to supporting these farmers and in this regard the Government have agreed to provide up to €2m for the new fodder scheme,” he said.
This support will apply to the loss of silage, hay, straw and concentrates where there is evidence of damage caused by flooding and where the losses are not covered by insurance.
Mr Coveney praised “the tremendous community spirit of neighbours and the collaborative effort of all the agencies involved in supporting everyone affected by the flooding”.
Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association president Patrick Kent welcomed the announced support but questioned if there will be sufficient funds to cover the widespread damage.
He also said the introduction of a flood-management co-ordination agency is a step in the right direction, but he was concerned it could be bogged down in bureaucratic wrangling between agencies.
