EU urged to see global context to food debate
Speaking at the Irish Holstein Friesian Association golden jubilee in Kilnard Hotel, Co Laois, the Fine Gael MEP said farming has changed hugely in 50 years.
She said IHFA’s role in effecting positive change will be invaluable in EU agriculture’s current evolution.
“Today agriculture is challenged to meet the difficulties posed by intense volatility on agriculture markets.
"Dairy farmers are finding it difficult to plan and control their businesses due to volatility; we must look to all available support measures to address these concerns,” she said.
“We also need to broaden the conversation about sustainable farming and food production beyond the EU borders as global issues impact on Irish farms directly through market price movements,” she said.
Ms McGuinness congratulated IHFA president Peter Ging and its chairman Richard Whelan on the success of the association.
She said IHFA members have built up the breed and individual herds to a very high level, winning recognition for the quality of Irish cattle on the EU and world stage.
